The leaves are changing, PSL’s are back on coffee shop menus and apple orchards are on our agendas. This is hands down my favorite time a year, mostly because of the cuddly sweaters we get to wear, but also because of the delicious recipes we can make with the apples we picked! First up this apple season is a healthy and easy apple crisp!
The beauty of this recipe is that it’s versatile. You can make it in a classic 9×9 pan or use cute glass baking cups. I loved the glass baking dishes because I stored them in a larger tupperware right in the fridge and eat right out of them, aka basically no dishes to do. It’s a win-win situation if you ask me. You could also make this easy apple crisp in traditional baking cups like these, same idea.
This apple crisp recipe is not only delicious but you only need ONE BOWL to make it. All of the ingredients are simple and are things you either have at home already or can pick up during your next grocery shop. We are all about simplicity over here at BSE.
Whenever I make a healthier version of a dessert, I always want it to be low sugar, lower in calories, fats and dishes but high in taste and simplicity. This easy apple crisp recipe could not be better, I can’t wait for you to try it!
Ingredients & alternatives:
Apples: I made these apple crisps using sun crisp apples from the apple orchard, but you can really use any kind you have on hand. Keep in mind the more tart the apple, the most sugar you may want to add to make them sweeter. I’d choose honey crisp, granny smith, pink lady or gala, if possible.
Stevia: If you don’t have stevia or another zero-calorie sweetener, feel free to use traditional sugar or brown sugar. They will work the same, I just prefer to use stevia to cut some of the calories.
Cornstarch: Alternatively, you could use more whole wheat flour or arrowroot powder as a thickener. If you have xanthan gum, that would probably work too, but I wouldn’t use the same ratio, just a tsp or two. I have not tested this recipe with anything other than cornstarch though so tread lightly.
Cinnamon: The basic kind you have sitting in your spice cabinet.
Oats: You can use old fashioned or instant or one-minute oats for this recipe, actually I think instant would work better because they are smaller.
Whole wheat flour: Other kinds of flour should work here too, although I’d stick away from almond flour or some of those lighter flours here unless you add more.
Maple syrup: You could also use honey or agave here if you don’t have maple syrup or if you don’t want to pay $10 for a bottle. I get it.
Coconut oil: You could swap butter or even ghee here. There’s not enough going in the recipe to make that big of a difference. Again, I haven’t tested this recipe with anything else other than coconut oil but I imagine those options would work the same.
How to make apple crisp
All you’ll need to make this easy apple crisp recipe is one bowl and either mini baking cups or a 9×9 pan, making clean up so easy.
You’ll add all of your filling ingredients — chopped apples, stevia/sweetener, cornstarch and cinnamon — into the bowl and mix until the apples are coated well. Then pour the apple filling into your baking dish evenly.
In the same large bowl, add in your crumble ingredients — oats, flour, cinnamon, maple syrup & melted coconut oil — and mix well. The mixture appears really dry at first, but keep mixing and it will become the perfect crumble topping. Once combined, pour evenly on top of the apple filling.
Then it’s time to throw the easy apple crisp into the a 350 degree oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the crumble is golden brown and perfect *chef kisses*.
You’ll have to let the apple crisp cool to ensure all the juices from the apples are absorbed. But once you wait 10-20 minutes, you’ll can serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top!

Healthy and Easy Apple Crisp
Equipment
- Oven safe baking cups or 9×9 pan
Ingredients
Apple Filling
- 3 small apples, chopped ~ 365g, use 6 apples if you are making with a 9×9 pan, I used sun crisp but any apple variety works
- 2 tbsp stevia or sweetener or choice
- 2 tbsp cornstarch 16g
- 2 tsp cinnamon
Crisp Topping
- 3/4 cup oats 75g
- 1/4 cup whole wheat or all purpose flour 30g
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 2 tbsp maple syrup 30 g
- 1 tbsp coconut oil, melted 14g
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Mix all apple filling ingredients in a large bowl until the apples are coated.
- Scoop apple filling into baking cups or pour in 9×9 baking pan.
- In the same large bowl, mix the crisp topping ingredients. The mixture will seem really dry at first but keep mixing until well combined.
- Scoop or pour topping on top of the apple filling.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes, depending on how soft you'd like the apples.
- Once baked, let cool before eating. If making in baking cups, you can eat after the apple crisp cools for 10 minutes or so. If making in a 9×9, you'll want to let it cool for longer to allow the apple filling to absorb any remaining liquid.
- Serve warmed up with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, if you'd like!
